FAQs
How do I audition?
We hold auditions every September. If you didn't get in the first time, you can still try again next year!

What do I need to prepare for my audition?
All you need to do is prepare a verse and chorus of a song that is suitable for your voice range, shows your performance ability, and quality of voice.

Do I need to be able to sight-read?
No, not at all. Many people are accepted into Newtones without being able to sight-read, as it is an optional part of the audition. For the most part, we just want to hear your voice and see if you can blend with the group. Sight-reading is a skill that musicians learn through time. Don't worry if you can't sight-read! We can teach you.

How many people do you accept per year?
It depends. We usually keep the group between 12 and 16 people, meaning that the amount of new members varies depending on how many people graduated at the end of the previous school year.

What makes us different from other groups?
We are one of the two groups like this at Newton South High School. We are the only group that is completely student-run and not affiliated with the school. We perform at many shows hosted in the South community, perform at a variety of gigs in the Greater Boston area, and compete at the International Competition of High School A Cappella (ICHSA).

Do you receive any outside help or have adult supervision?
No. Newtones is a completely student-run group. This means that we do not receive professional assistance/training or have an advisor. All music is arranged and taught by a member of the group, and events are planned and organized through a member of our group. While fun, our group is very mature and self sufficient.

What is the time commitment like?
We hold rehearsal twice a week in the evenings after school (days are decided upon when the group is assembled). As well as practices, expect there to be gigs during the weekdays as well as weekends (which vary month-to-month). Don't worry if you have other time commitments! Members of our group are leaders of other clubs, play school sports, and perform in plays/musicals throughout the year. We'll make it work!
